The new Terra Trek jacket by Fly racing is an updated version of the previous version called Terra Trek 4 (I guess Fly decided to ditch the number sequencing and start over for 2018). The Terra Trek is a longer coverage jacket which is favored by commuters, touring riders and adventure riders too. It comes with CE armor, a removable thermal liner and space for an optional CE back protector.
The Terra Trek has a lot of the same general design features as their new Butane jacket but this is a longer style where the Butane is a standard “waist length” jacket. The biggest features to talk about for this jacket is climate controls. The shell itself is a traditional solid textile material, which works well for wind break and abrasion protection should you fall. The shell material is coated on the back side with a breathable/waterproof barrier to repel water if you get caught in a rain. All the sewn seams are taped to complete the waterproofing. The external pocket zips and zippered vents are all the waterproof type as well. With the “coated” waterproofing and the waterproof zip, it means that air flowing through the zip vents when open will go directly through the jacket to your body which is a good thing for warm to hot weather. The zip vents include two LARGE vents in the upper torso, two sleeve end vents and two rear vents for exhaust.
With the textile shell and the waterproof barrier, and with the removable thermal liner in place, you’ll find this jacket to very effective in cold weather as well. You can layer with your own garments under the jacket to provide even more insulation. And the thermal liner is “full sleeve” so you get extra insulation in the sleeves and also the torso.
With the plentiful zip venting for summer, and the removable thermal liner for cooler weather, I’d have to say this jacket would be good for four seasons for most people, which is an unusual feature in this price range.
The armor for the shoulders and elbows is include with the jacket and it is CE level 1. Its standard molded armor found in most street jackets. The jacket comes with a thin foam back pad which is really only a “placeholder” type. If you want a truly protective back pad, use the link below to add the optional Fly Racing Barricade unit.
I mentioned that commuters and touring riders like a longer style like this and storage is one of the main reasons. This jacket has the usual inside pockets and in front, it has two large patch pockets down low and one very large fanny pocket in back. I really like this new style Terra Trek and I think it is an excellent value. :: Paul, 11-14-18
