The SMX Air Sport Jacket features a main chassis constructed from tech mesh on the rider’s abdomen, back, and inner arms, paired with 450D polyfabric reinforcement on the outer arms and shoulders. The SMX Air also incorporates perforated 450D polyfabric on the upper chest for excellent levels of airflow during the warm, summer riding months. Extended polyamide stretch material has been incorporated on the rider’s back, shoulders, and sides, with a high-density stretch material on the upper back. The stretch material provides an adaptive fit and a high level of freedom of movement, as well as offers the perfect expansion ability for use with the Tech-Air® 5 Airbag System. As the SMX Air Jacket has been designed to provide premium ventilation, the jacket also comes with a detachable windbreaker liner to help reduce airflow when it’s not needed, offering optimal climate comfort and versatility. DFS Lite external shoulder sliders paired with Nucleon Flex Plus CE Level 1 shoulder, elbow, and forearm armor together provide impact protection for the SMX Air Jacket, resulting in a CE level A rating overall. These jackets are sold in US based “alpha” sizes, so selecting a size is basically pretty easy. The size Medium and XL jackets fit Huey and Dewey, our Fit Check mannequins very nicely! Also, we checked several sizes with a tape. We found the sizing to be comparable to standard men’s clothing sizes. So our primary advice would be to choose the size you normally wear in men’s clothing.

Alpinestars publishes a super-complicated size chart which can be used to pick a size based upon your chest and waist. We’ve condensed their chart down to make it easy to read (see below). You can use this size chart to check your own measurements against the size chart to make sure the size you select will work. Choose a size that is big enough for both your chest and belly.

Please note, this style has a slightly more aggressive drop from chest to belly than typical for this type of jacket. Be sure to the max waist/belly is large enough if you have a bit of a belly, but don’t be concerned if your belly is smaller than the size listed below because this jacket has effective side waist adjustment straps.

Our Two Cents

The Alpinestars SMX Air jacket is designed with the summer sport or commuting rider in mind.

Large mesh panels cover the front, back, and under side of the arms on this mesh jacket allowing air to flow through freely. Combined with the thin Nucleon Flex Plus armor this jacket will be lightweight and flexible. There are pockets to upgrade to optional Nucleon chest and back protectors as well. There are also hardened external DFS Lite armor at the shoulder.

There are two zippered hand pockets at the belly and one internal hook and loop storage pocket and one zippered waterproof internal storage pocket. Additionally there is one hook and loop storage pocket on the removable windbreaker liner. At the waist are hook and loop adjusters so you can snug the belly down to fit if needed. Inside the rear of the jacket are two snap loops to attach the jacket to pants via the belt loops.
