The Aeroshell Waterproof Jacket from Alpinestars is a waterproof jacket that gives off the look of a hoodie, more specifically it looks like athletic wear. It has a super casual style and can be easily worn off the bike as it passes for regular clothes. Overall construction is a combination of a stretch soft outer shell mixed with a fixed, fully seam taped, internal waterproof membrane. Overall the jacket earns a CE a rating.
Taking a look at sizing the Aeroshell jacket comes in sizes from S to 4XL, and has a fairly tailored fit, but it isn’t overly tight. At 6 foot, roughly 215 pounds, I typically wear a size XL in Alpinestars Jackets and here in the Aeroshell a size XL fits me exactly as I would expect it to. Our recommendation is to get whatever size you normally wear in alpinestars or most major european brands and you should find a good fit.
The main zipper is waterproof, there is a zipper garage to keep your neck comfortable, but keep in mind that there isn’t a cover on the bottom end of the zipper so be mindful of you gas tank getting scratched potentially. Behind the zipper there is an extended wind catcher tab with an extra folded over tab at the end to further protect against water getting in.
On the front of the hoodie there are two black stripes, they serve as a way to hide the zippers for the hand warmer style pockets. The pockets are a good size however the zippers are not waterproof so keep that in mind. Additionally I do feel that Alpinestars missed an opportunity here in not making the black stripes a reflective material, so far on the front I don’t see any reflective bits present.
On the back there is an extended back for more coverage and there are black stripes starting at the back or under the shoulderblade area and they make their way all the way around to the underarms, they are a flap that covers a nicely sized vent for additional comfort. And speaking of exhaust vents, there is also a similar, hidden, exhaust vent on the hood as well. Once again my only complaint about the back of the jacket is the lack of reflective materials. I especially am bothered by this on a jacket that is waterproof, IE to be used during bad weather which usually results in lower visibility.
On the inside of the jacket there is a velcro strip that can attach an optional chest protector and there is a pocket on the back for the optional back protector, keep in mind that this one will accommodate both a regular sized back protector as well as the long back protector. Speaking of protectors, in the shoulders included is level 1 armor, its nucleon flex plus, it's super breathable and bendable and it is T+ and T-, and it’s stored in an easy to get to armor pocket, so if you want to upgrade to level 2, you can. Additional included armor is at the elbows, once again same level 1 armor, but do keep in mind that both the elbow and shoulder armor are not adjustable.
A few last items to point out, included are jeans loop hooks, a hidden drawstring for waist fit and adjustment, the hood has an anchor point on the back to keep from flapping around while riding and it also has an internal button that allows you to roll the hood up and store it internally. There is also an extended back for lower back coverage, and on the inside on the right there is a velcro closure based mesh pocket, and on the left there is a waterproof zippered pocket.
Overall the Aeroshell Jacket from Alpinestars delivers commuter level safety, while providing excellent comfort and style, all in a waterproof package. Much like Alpinestar’s Moblast jacket, the Aeroshell is worth looking at if you are looking to stay safe, while looking casual during your commute or urban ride. :: Damir 11/22/25
