Merlin Berea Trail D3O Glove

The Merlin Explorer Collection has been designed to complement the rise in accessible, do-it-all motorcycles, alongside the growing number of riders pushing themselves, exploring and creating memories. Explorer offers rugged styling, durability and protection while incorporating the signature Merlin styling using only the best materials and components, such as high performance single-layer laminated styles, Halley Stevensons® ripstop fabrics, D3O® armour and Cordura®.

Merlin Berea D3O® Trail Gloves:
  • Berea is a D3O protected trail glove from Merlin. Available in two colourways, black and grey, Berea also features stretch textile panels across the fingers, wrist and thumb for maximum flexibility needed for an adventure or trail ride. With leather wrapped over D3O’s impact protection sheet foam on the knuckles, there is excellent rider protection. Riders then benefit from the soft and supple textile palm which fits close to the skin as expected from a spring/summer style, without waterproofing.
Caring For Your Berea Gloves:
  • To care for your Berea gloves, please only use neutral soap and a sponge our lint-free cloth to wipe over the surface. Do not leave the gloves to soak in a bucket as you would with a textile glove. View our full wash and care guide here: Merlin Wash & Care.

Our Two Cents

The Berea D30 Trail Gloves from Merlin are a part of their explorer collection, which was designed to complement motorcycles and their riders who have a do it all attitude and willingness to explore. Overall construction comes from multiple materials such as goat leather for the knuckles, 2 way stretch spandex textile for the top side, polyester corduroy fourchettes, and a soft micro suede for the palm. Speaking of the knuckle, it is a solid knuckle with a leather overlay and it also features a sheet of D3O® under the solid knuckle. Additional D3O® can also be found in a foam capacity at the palm. The Berea Trail gloves do earn a CE level 1kp protection rating.

Additional features include a 3M safety reflective, conductive Digital Touch index finger and thumb tip that in testing worked well with both Android and iPhone, pre-curved fingers, accordion stretch panels on the index and middle fingers, as well as a short summer cuff with a hook and loop enclosure. From a style standpoint the marlins branding is fairly subtle and the gloves come in two different color options. Additionally the Berea Trail gloves do feature some perforation at the palm as well as on the fingers.

Overall this to me is a fairly light weight glove, if you are looking for simplicity and comfort this glove has it, but for me, it just isn’t enough protection for road use, for trail use, as it’s name applies I would be ok with. I would like to see more sliders and hard parts to feel good about this glove on the road since I prioritize safety above style and comfort but again, for trail use at lower speeds I feel a lot better about it. With the Merlin Berea D3O® Trail Gloves coming in at just around $70 bucks I feel like we have better options with more protection in the price range if road is your primary use case. Lastly from a fit standpoint, the fit went close to as expected with me fitting my usual size large glove, but I will say that if you are in-between sizes to go up instead of down, you are more likely to find a fit that way. :: Damir 6/4/24
