Our Two Cents

The N40 is a ¾ length helmet that comes with a peak visor, a face shield, and an internal drop down sun visor. The peak visor has some adjustability and can move up and out of the way when the face shield is in the up position. The drop down sun visor is controlled by a small lever just behind the base plate on the left hand side of the helmet. The sun visor is not spring loaded like in most other helmets and has six positions it can be set at before it is fully retracted into the top of the helmet. There are 4 intakes in the top vent that draw air into some pretty big channeling built into the top of the EPS liner. The channeling directs the air to the rear vents. These rear vents are located just below the spoiler of the helmet. The spoiler has two important jobs. It keeps the helmet steady at speed by creating downward pressure on the top of the helmet. It also creates an area of low pressure just below the spoiler. This makes a perfect place to put exhaust vents. The low pressure area draws the hot air being channeled to the back of the helmet by the top vents out through the large rear vents. I would say the fit of the helmet is an intermediate oval shape. I am typically a medium helmet in most brands and the medium in the N40 felt like a perfect fit. I do have a pretty narrow face and the cheek pads were snug on me so if you have a wide jaw line or more rounded facial features you might have some trouble getting a comfortable fit out of the N40 right out of the box. The N40 does not offer replacement cheek pads but they can be modified to loosen the fit. To do that you need to remove the liner and pull out the padding for the cheeks. You can reduce the thickness from 1.75 inches to 1 inch on each side. With the liner out you can easily access the speaker pockets for a communications system. Overall I really like what Nolan has done with this helmet. You can easily remove the peak visor, the face shield or both and really change up the look of the helmet. It makes it really diverse for all types and styles. –Aaron 11/13/2014
