Our Two Cents
This new X-Fifteen helmet is the latest race model from Shoei. After over 2 years in development with the help of MotoGP racers Marc and Alex Marquez, 150+ clay molds, and countless hours of testing in Shoei’s in-house, full-sized wind tunnel, Shoei has brought a new lightweight, premium race helmet to the market to replace their flagship X-Fourteen model.
The new helmet weighs in at just 1615 grams in size large, which is about 40 grams lighter than the X-Fourteen. The shell is slightly narrower than the X-14 so you have less of a bobblehead look as well. The X-Fifteen comes in 4 Shell sizes Small (XS and Small sizes), Medium is its own shell size, Large also gets its own shell, and then the XL (XL and XXL sizes).
Shoei has carried over and improved on several innovations of the X-Fourteen model. The cheek pads have 23 ventilation holes per side now, versus 12 on the X-Fourteen cheek pads. The vent channels in the EPS liner have also increased in size from 6mm on the X-Fourteen to 10mm on the X-Fifteen, allowing more airflow to keep you cool when you have the intake vents open. And speaking of vents, the X-Fifteen has 7 closable intake vents and 6 exhaust vents to pull air through the helmet using the venturi effect. The shield is slightly larger on the X-Fifteen and the cheek pads can be positioned for an aggressive riding position that increases the field of view by 5 degrees over the previous model. The Pinlock insert (which is included) is also 10% larger.
The interior of the X-Fifteen is very customizable with the ability to swap cheek pads and in a first for Shoei they have optional padding for the crown that allows you to adjust the fit. There is also a small cut out for a hydration system in the chin bar that should work with most hydration packs. The CWR-F2R shields have vortex generators on the sides for improved aerodynamic performance, tear-off posts, and has a dual lock system to keep the shield closed at extreme speeds. There is one push button lock at the center and one flip over lock that slides over from the left side of the center toward the center to lock the shield down. The base plate system also has red “trigger locks” that lock the spring mechanism to prevent the shield from coming off inadvertently.
When you open the box you will find the pinlock insert in the top level of packing styrofoam. Under this layer the helmet is in it’s bag, and if we remove it from the box we find the package containing the instruction manual, a chin curtain to limit the amount of air that comes up into the helmet from the chin area, a breath deflector, a chin spoiler, and silicone oil. The chin, or lower air spoiler, looks very similar to the breath deflector but it installs on the bottom of the helmet just like the chin curtain. This will diffuse the air at the chin and help with the aerodynamics of the helmet at high speed. The other insert in the package is the breath deflector, it has the Shoei logo on it so you can differentiate between it and the chin spoiler. The breath deflector will help to keep your breath off the shield. Finally, we see this small plastic bottle which has silicone oil. The oil is for where the shield meets the rubber gasket. In the instruction booklet it outlines the area to apply the oil to, but basically you want it on the top and sides up to just short of where the breath deflector sits. Just remember a little silicone oil goes a long way so be sure to use it in moderation and wipe off any excess oil. There are also a couple of Shoei stickers in the package.
The Shoei X-Fifteen is ECE 22.06, Snell M2020R, and DOT rated. We like the innovation and performance cues that Shoei has put into their new race model, and the fact that they have still thought of the street rider with things like speaker cut outs and eye-glass channels.
