Our Two Cents
The Alpinestars SMX Waterproof Jacket is just that a waterproof motorcycle jacket that features a soft shell and what Alpinestars calls an optimal blend of durability, light weight and comfort, overall the SMX waterproof jacket features a sport like style. Overall construction is a blend of a 600D poly-fabric and stretch soft-shell, with a 2L waterproof membrane. The fixed waterproof membrane features Durable Water Repellent treatment and there is a thermal liner included that is detachable and is 100g at the body and 80g at the selves making this jacket quite versatile when it comes to varying weather conditions. The jacket also features a low profile sports style collar and a soft lining on the inside for additional comfort. This construction has resulted in a CE Level A abrasion resistance rating. Speaking of protection the SMX waterproof jacket is Tech-Air® 5 ready and does include CE Level 1 Alpinestars Nucleon Flex Plus shoulder and elbow protectors. Additionally a back protector pocket is included as well as divided chest protector pockets, but you have to purchase the back protector and divided chest protectors separately. Lastly the jacket features DFS lite shoulder with dynamic friction shield for enhanced abrasion resistance as well as what look to be a slim profile shoulder slider.
Looking at comfort and convenience, there are strategically positioned stretch panel inserts, the overall fit has pre-curved sleeves, and there is a shock cord at the waist to adjust fit. Speaking of the waist the rear of the jacket is elongated for better coverage when in the riding position. For convenience there are two front pockets that are zippered, a document pocket on the inside of the liner as well as two additional interior pockets that are located on the inside of the jacket itself. A few other features to note are the hook and look adjusters at the wrists, as well as jeans loop hooks for attaching to your favorite Moto pants.
Overall from a look standpoint the SMX Waterproof jacket features quite a few Alpinestars logos, think shoulders, elbows, back and front, so I hope you like logos, there is also a Honda version as well. But regardless of the excess use of logos I still think the jacket looks good, and I especially like the Navy and Gray color way. Also to note it is considered a sport fit jacket, and remember it is a European brand so it will fit a bit tight, the XL I tried on, my normal size was tighter than I expected, it still fit, but was tighter. Lastly I would say that value for the money is good but not great, at the $300 price range it is by no means a bad or ugly jacket, in fact I quite like it, but for the money or close to the money that are jackets that are more versatile, offer better protection or both. :: Damir 6/27/24
