Our Two Cents
The Switchback ADV gloves from Tourmaster, not to be confused with the regular Switchback gloves, are a pair of what I would call mid length/ mid cuff adventure gloves. The Switchback ADV gloves are primarily made out of a 3D Hi-Flow mesh on top of the hand for maximum ventilation and flexibility while the inside of the glove features goatskin leather in the palm and fingers. Speaking of the palm, there is a reinforcement layer where you normally grip, as well as where the palm connects to the wrist, with the latter also featuring a Medium density EVA foam for added impact protection. The same type of leather reinforcement featuring a Medium density EVA foam can also be found on the outside of the pinky.
For comfort and convenience the Switchback ADV gloves feature perforations on the inside of the fingers, pre-curved fingers, palm and articulated wrist cuff, as well as ultra-stretch and breathable Lycra fourchettes, finger gussets and the back of hand for maximum comfort. Also, these gloves are touch screen compatible as they feature AX® Connect Touchscreen compatible index finger and thumb overlays. In our testing, the gloves performed well with both iPhone and Android models. The wrist closure features minimal stretch and is secured via hook and loop allowing for good adjustability. Overall I think the Switchback ADV gloves are very comfortable and feel good on my hands.
Overall protection primarily comes from the leather for abrasion resistance, the EVA foam on the wrist and pinky and the Full-Coverage soft and flexible, sonic welded, custom TPR impact knuckle protectors. The knuckle protectors are quite long, spanning from the middle of the top of the hand all the way down to the finger knuckles (providing extra protection). Overall these gloves are not CE rated, my assumption is that it is not that they wouldn’t pass, but rather with Tourmaster being primarily sold in the USA, they didn’t bother with having the gloves certified. As a whole I don’t think the Switchback ADV gloves offer the highest level of protection for on road duties when compared to all of the different gloves that we offer, but I do believe they are adequate for off road and trail use (as you are not going as fast) and for the at the time of this review price of $34.99 they offer more than expected protection for the money. Overall a solid value.
A few final things to note, the Switchback ADV Gloves come in three different colors, are available in sizes from Small to 3XL, and come with a 4 year manufacturer warranty. And speaking of sizes, that’s something to watch out for with these gloves. I typically wear a size large in European sizes, typically Tourmaster is American cut, so I would expect to either wear my usual size or possibly even size down. But in the case of the Switchback ADV gloves I tried on a size XL (one size bigger than normal) and they fit me how I would normally expect a Large to fit. :: Damir 12/6/24
