Sizing Information
I measured a sampling of these pants and found the waist sizes to measure out right about 1” larger than the stated size. Most “vanity sized” jeans these days will measure out about 2” larger than the stated size, so that means these pants will fit just a touch more snug than most store-bought fashions jeans. My advice would be to measure your waist (just under your belly button) and choose a size based on the measurement. The waistband is not adjustable but the pants have belt loops so you can wear a belt if necessary to fine tune the fit. The inseam lengths listed below are the lengths I measured.
The inseam on the pants measured out to about 32” across the size range… maybe 33” in the largest sizes. The pants have knee armor and there are three positions that the knee armor installs to give you sort of a “high-med-low” adjustability up and down.
Our Two Cents
The Icon Varial pants are something new from Icon… not a baggy fit! These pants are “standard” fit through the seat and legs and tapered to the ankle. They are stylish and have leather overlays on the knees for added abrasion resistance. Also they have venting!
I really like the fit of these new pants. They are a slim cut, but have enough room in the seat and crotch to be comfortable in a riding position. The legs taper down significantly so they’ll work great with riding shoes, and will go over touring boots (that fit close to your leg), but probably won’t work with heavy boot (like adventure styles) or race boots with thick shin protectors. The pants have cargo-like pockets on the thighs with zipper closures. And built into the front sides of those cargo pockets are zippered vents. Those vents are positioned to face-forward toward the wind blast. so they are positioned very well to catch some air flow. Besides that, there are two ordinary front pockets and one rear-side slash pocket with a zipper closure.
The fabric used in these pants is a denim/Cordura blend and they feel pretty substantial and I would expect them to do significantly better for abrasion resistance as compared plain denim. And then they have the leather over the knees which is even better.
Included with the pants is armor inserts by D3O which is Icon’s “go to” brand of armor. The armor is ideal for pants like this since it is soft and flexible and comfortable. The armor slips in a “triple position” pocket. You can choose which pocket to slip the armor into which places it higher or lower on your leg so you can get a goof fit. As for a connection to jacket, there is not a zipper, but there are regular belt loops, so I’d recommend just using your own belt to adjust the fit and to hold them on your body in case of a fall. Overall, I’m a fan of this style if only for the style, and I also like the other styling features such as the leather overlays and the unusual pocket arrangement. To me these pants have a “high end” feel to them as compared to regular riding jeans. :: Paul, 05-02-18
